Wiz Khalifa appeals nine-month prison sentence

Wiz Khalifa has appealed his prison sentence in Romania after being sentenced to nine months last year.

The Pittsburgh rapper was sentenced by the Constanta Court of Appeal in December after he was caught smoking weed on stage at Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti in July 2024.

He was charged with illegal drug possession in October 2024 for having 18.53 grams of cannabis and “a cigarette that contained cannabis.”

According to Romania Insider, Wiz appealed his sentence with the Constanta Tribunal on January 21st. A hearing is scheduled to take place on April 3rd.

The rapper was previously hit with a criminal fine of 3,000 lei (around £515), but the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism appealed the decision.

Ultimately, the court agreed with prosecutors and replaced the fine with almost a year behind bars. Romania has strict cannabis laws; weed is considered a high-risk drug and carries imprisonment of up to six months to three years.

Following the 2024 arrest, which was captured in videos and shared on social media, Wiz apologised for the incident and promised not to smoke in the country again.

“Last nights show was amazing,” he wrote online. “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”

Shortly after the sentencing, Wiz announced that he was planning to appeal the conviction.

Social media personality Andrew Tate showed support to Wiz, writing on X, “Romanians now trying to throw Wiz Khalifa in jail. Come see me @wizkhalifa I know how to get better blankets and pillows.”
