Wiz Khalifa sentenced to nine months in Romanian prison

Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania on drug possession charges.

The 38-year-old rapper (real name Cameron Thomas) smoked weed on stage at Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti in July 2024.

Wiz was charged with illegal drug possession in October 2024 after allegedly being found with 18.53 grams of cannabis and “a cigarette that contained cannabis.”

According to Mediafax, he was sentenced by the Constanța Court of Appeal on December 18th. The court partially overturned a previous ruling, which imposed a criminal fine of 3,000 lei (around £515).

Despite the judge’s ruling, Wiz was sentenced in absentia and won’t serve his sentence unless he returns to Romania.

Romania’s strict cannabis laws make it illegal for recreational and medical use. Weed, which is considered a high-risk drug, carries imprisonment of up to six months to three years.

Following the arrest, Wiz took to social media to apologise for smoking in the European country and thanked police officers for releasing him.

“Last nights show was amazing,” he wrote. “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”

Footage surfaced online of Wiz being escorted by police after committing the crime on stage.

After the incident took place, the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism said in a statement, “It was noted that he, during a recital held at a music festival taking place in Costinești resort, Constanta county, possessed over 18 grams of cannabis (a high-risk drug) and consumed (onstage) another amount of cannabis in the form of an artisanal cigarette.”
