Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Chromakopia’ is the biggest hip-hop album of 2024
Tyler, The Creator’s latest album CHROMAKOPIA has become the biggest hip-hop album of the year so far, judging by its first-day Spotify streams. After its release on October 28th, the project amassed 85 million streams in its first 24 hours on the platform.
According to ChartData, this has made the album the most successful in hip-hop this year and it even falls in the top 20 all-time debut in all genres. Furthermore, in the top 20 Spotify debuts of all time, CHROMAKOPIA ranks at number 16 and falls under several hip-hop projects, including Travis Scott’s UTOPIA, Kanye West’s DONDA, Kendrick Lamar Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers as well as three Drake albums.
The release of this seventh studio album from the emcee was fairly impromptu and exciting for fans. On October 16th, the former Odd Future frontman released a new teaser entitled ‘ST. CHROMA’, which was the first track of the album’s rollout campaign. For the song, Tyler dropped a short music video which showed the word “CHROMAKOPIA” at the end.
He shortly after confirmed that there was an album on the way, simply writing, “CHROMAKOPIA: october 28th.” Furthermore, to add excitement and the adrenaline of a new album in fans’ veins, the Goblin creator unveiled that he would be taking the album on a world tour next year.
However, his California fans were the luckiest as only hours before the body of work landed, he delivered his first public performance of the album and delivered it in its entirety as a large-scale listening party at the Intuit Dome in LA’s Inglewood neighbourhood.
After his performance, the Flower Boy lyricist gave a speech about the inspiration behind CHROMAKOPIA, stating, “This album originally started [with me] growing up in these areas. I was like, ‘Oh shit, no one knows anything about me from before, like, 17.”
He continued, “The album kinda just turned into me taking a bunch of shit my mom told me as a kid. Now that I’m 33, all of that stuff is like, ‘Oh, that’s what the fuck she was talking about!’” He added, “People are getting older, folks are having kids and families, and all I got is a new Ferrari. I’m gaining weight, I got a grey hair on my chest.”
As one of the biggest albums of the year, the world tour will undoubtedly sell out very quickly. Named CHROMAKOPIA: THE WORLD TOUR, Tyler, the Creator, alongside Lil Yachty and Paris Texas, will begin his trek in North America, then take the tour to the UK and all of Europe, and finish off the Tour doing shows across Australia and New Zealand. The tour will begin in St Paul, Minnesota, on February 4th and will finish in Perth, Australia, on September 4th.
The tickets for the world tour will go live on November 1st at 10am local time in your area. American Express Cardholders can also purchase pre-sale tickets from October 29th.
