Tory Lanez has recording equipment seized in prison raid
While serving time in prison, Canadian musician Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) has been sporadically releasing music under the title, Prison Tapes. This run of new releases appears to have come to an end, though, as Lanez’s lawyers have confirmed that the rapper had his recording equipment seized in a raid on his cell block.
Lanez is currently locked up in the California Correctional Institution, where he is serving a sentence as a result of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The rapper has been relatively quiet following his arrest and subsequent conviction. There was an argument leading up to the shooting, and he confirmed that he still “cared for” Megan and regretted the argument that the two of them had, which led to the shooting. He also said, “I’m asking for redemption… I’m asking for another chance.”
Despite the defence’s plea to Judge David Herriford not to punish Lanez too harshly, the judge believed that though he saw genuine remorse, his good works were outweighed by discharging a firearm five times and striking Megan Thee Stallion’s feet twice in the process.
“Unfortunately, sometimes good people do bad thing,” said Herriford, “Mr Peterson’s actions in those few seconds changed many lives.”
He has been passing the time in prison by keeping his talent sharp and continuing to make new music, as fans have been subject to brand new tracks called ‘Basement’ and ‘Appellate Court Freestyle’, which have been released under the title Prison Tapes.
While these new releases have been benefitting the rapper’s record sales, it appears they have come to a premature end. Ceaser McDowell, the CEO of Unite the People and chief deputy on the legal team supporting Lanez, has confirmed that prison officers have removed the recording equipment from his cell block. This is because inmates are strictly forbidden from having recording devices.
His team is waiting for news about whether Lanez will face any further consequences. In the meantime, fans of Lanez will just have to enjoy some of the work he managed to squeeze out before his equipment was confiscated.
The rapper continues to have a lot of supporters who back him up. Fans have been relentlessly streaming his music, so much so that his single ‘The Color Violet’ has recently surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. On top of that, rappers such as Drake continue calling for Lanez’s freedom and asking for him to be released from prison.
