The track Ice Spice called “the song of the summer”
Ice Spice has had a whirlwind of a career so far. Since the release of her viral TikTok hit ‘Much (Feelin’ U), the Bronx emcee has been on an upward trajectory, headlining festivals such as Rolling Loud and touring the world. She has even been featured on tracks with the likes of Nicki Minaj and has been in contact with Drake.
Since then, Gaston has released performed at Drake’s OVO Fest and released singles such as ‘Bikini Bottom’ and ‘In Ha Mood’. Last year, her EP, Like..?, debuted at 37 on the Billboard 200, and the New York native even released a deluxe edition of the EP, which featured four additional tracks.
With so many hits under her belt already, it’s safe to say the drill artist knows a thing or two about making anthems, and earlier this month, the ‘Deli’ rhymer unveiled what she believes to be the song of this year’s summer season.
As she worked her way up the red carpet of this year’s BET Awards, Ice Spice spoke to the Today Show about 2024 songs she is really feeling. When asked which track has been the best of the summer, the ‘Barbie World’ emcee responded, “I think it’s ‘Espresso.’ I don’t think we have a choice—it’s ‘Espresso,’ yeah.”
Released as the lead single of the singer Sabrina Carpenter’s upcoming album, Short ‘n’ Sweet, Espresso has spent 12 weeks in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at number three.
Carpenter has been on a roll recently. Aside from ‘Espresso’, her follow-up track, ‘Please Please Please,’ is also in the charts. However, it sits at the top, initially clinching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Ice Spice has released several singles for her upcoming album Y2K!, including the likes of ‘Gimme the Light’ and ‘Think U the Shit’. However, from her response to the host of Today it is evident she doesn’t believe she has produced a song that can compete with ‘Espresso’ yet.
That said, the 24-year-old’s anticipated debut album arrives on July 26th, so there is plenty of time for another single to shoot its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by the end of the month.
Unsurprisingly, Carpenter and Ice Spice have a friendship which formed at a pre-Grammys party in Los Angeles last year, and some footage from the event captured the two having a warm exchange and posing for photos together. Still there may even be a Carpenter feature on Y2K!
