New York female MCs Nicki Minaj and Ice Spive have released a new track, ‘Barbie World’, for the soundtrack of the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie movie. Long before this movie, Nicki Minaj had been using the nickname ‘Barbie,’ and the children’s doll has been a big part of her brand since she emerged on the scene in 2007.
Although artists such as Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B have acquired a lot of relevance, this track is still significant. Ice Spice first emerged in 2022 with her viral TikTok track ‘Munch’ and has since been among this year’s most talked about female rappers.
This latest collaboration sees Minaj and Ice Spice (real name Isis Gaston) rap over a drill remix of Aqua’s 1997 hit ‘Barbie Girl.’ Produced by RiotUSA, this New York song has been released as the fourth single from Barbie the album, following Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance the Night,’ Karol G’s ‘Watati,’ and PinkPantheress’ ‘Angel.”‘
Nicki Minaj released several Barbie-themes tracks for her 2018 album Queen, including, ‘Barbie Tingz’ and ‘Barbie Dreams.’ The Queens native (real name Onika Maraj) has also rocked a diamond Barbie chain since she found fame in 2007.
Similarly to how Beyonc has the ‘Bey Hive’ and how Rihanna has the ‘Navy,’ Nicki Minaj’s fanbase collectively named themselves the ‘Barbz’ and (sometimes to their detriment) have been very loyal to Minaj even when she deserved scrutiny.
Ice Spice has recently released her debut EP, Like…?, which boasted three hits, including, ‘Princess Diana,’ ‘Boys a Liar, Pt. 2’ featuring PinkPantheress, and “Karma” featuring the country-pop singer with Taylor Swift. For her first project Gaston was relatively successful debuting at number 37 on the Billboard 200.
This recent drill interpolation of the iconic ’90s hit ‘Barbie Girl’ will most definitely be a love-or-hate track for many. Both the soundtrack and film will be released on Friday, July 21st. Also, later this year, Minaj will be releasing her new album, which is anticipated to be released on October 20th.
