Taylor Swift disses Kanye West with lyric tweak
Taylor Swift has thrown some subtle shade at Kanye West with a slight tweak to a song name. While the Tortured Poets Department track was previously perceived to be a dig at Kim Kardashian, West’s ex-wife, a small change seems to have changed the target of her diss.
The feud between West and Swift is a length one. It started back in 2009 when West stormed the stage during the VMAs when a then 19-year-old Swift picked up the award for Best Female Video instead of Beyonce. After a truce period, the problems between them were reignited after West’s track, ‘Famous’ which includes the lyrics, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous” and came along with a music video featuring a naked Swift impersonator.
While West claimed he had Swift’s permission for the track, the pop star spoke out against the song in an acceptance speech soon after as she said, “I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.”
In response, West and his then-wife, Kim Kardashian, released a clip of a phone call that appeared to show Swift approving a section of the lyrics, leading to a swarm of hate toward the singer. However, a spokesperson from Swift’s camp clarified that she had never heard the full lyric and, from the get-go, refused to be involved with the release of the track due to her feelings towards it.
Since then, Swift, West and Kardashian have never publicly made up, with the impact of the feud and West’s long-running behaviour towards her regularly featuring in the pop star’s lyrics.
On her newest album, she appeared to address her feelings towards Kardashian with a track titled ‘thanK you aIMee’, with the capital letters spelling out “KIM”. “All that time you were throwing punches / I was building something / And I can’t forgive the way you made me feel,” she sings on the track as she sarcastically thanks “Aimee” for giving her resilience.
But now, a subtle change has been made to the track title for a newly released live version of the song. Available on her website for only a short period, the track is now called ‘thank You aimEe’, with the capital letters spelling “YE” instead.
Perhaps this is a sign that Swift has squashed her beef with the rapper’s ex-wife, being willing to forgive her for the actions of her past partner. However, it’s clear that the issues between the singer and West are far from over.
