Snoop Dogg honoured with key to the city of Long Beach
Snoop Dogg has been honoured with the key to the city of Long Beach.
The 54-year-old, who was born and raised in the California city, was given the key by Mayor Rex Richardson.
Snoop received the key after headlining the all-new F&M Bank Amphitheatre in Long Beach over the weekend, performing to 11,000 people at the waterfront venue.
Richardson wrote on social media, “Long Beach created the culture, and Snoop Dogg shared it with the world. Tonight’s sold-out opening of the FMB Amphitheater was more than a concert, it was a historic cultural moment decades in the making.”
He continued, “Presenting Snoop Dogg with the Key to the City recognises not only his extraordinary achievements in music, entertainment, and business, but also the authenticity, creativity, and pride with which he has represented Long Beach on the global stage for decades.”
Snoop performed in Long Beach for the first time in 2016 and wondered if the city had issues with him.
“I don’t know why they never let me perform here,” he said at the time. “I ain’t done nothing but do what I’m supposed to do: go around the world and give people great entertainment on stage. I can’t call it. I don’t know if the city has something against me, or my background, or my upbringing. [But] we’re going to make the most of tonight.”
He added, “To me, it’s not a homecoming. It’s just another show to me. This is what I do and now I’m just going to be able to do it in front of some of the people who grew up with me and watched me become who I am. That’ll be special, but at the same time, it’s just another game to me. I still have more points to score.”
Snoop released his latest album, 10 Til’ Midnight, on Death Row Records in April, with contributions from Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, and more.
