Sean Kingston appears in court regarding $1 million fraud case

American singer Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, face federal charges and a potential fine for allegedly defrauding a business of more than $1 million.

Federal prosecutors have confirmed that both the singer and his mother were charged on multiple counts before appearing ahead of a grand jury in Miami. These charges included one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, as well as five counts of wire fraud.

The charges state that the duo allegedly thought up a scheme to take items from multiple businesses, including jewellery, vehicles and other luxury goods. Prosecutors claim that Kingston and his mother had attempted to unjustly enrich themselves by stating they had transferred money for high-end goods when they hadn’t. After discovering no money had been sent or that payments had never gone through, the two of them would keep the items they allegedly wrongly acquired.

It has been alleged that the duo obtained more than $1million in property using the unlawful method. Some items they are alleged to have taken included a Cadillac Escalade worth $160K and $480K worth of jewellery without paying any of the parties a single penny.

Prosecutor Dennis Card explained how Kingston convinced businesses to part ways with their goods. Card said: “He’s got basically a script. He says that he works with Justin Bieber… and he lures people using his celebrity into having them release things without him paying for it, and then he simply never pays.”

Following a raid on Kingston’s Florida mansion, he and Turner were arrested in May 2024. They appeared in federal court for the first time on July 19th. If they’re convicted, extended jail time is a serious possibility. Each count has a maximum of 20 years attached, so if they’re found guilty of just one, it could mean an elongated period in prison. If the pair are found guilty of more than one count, then the amount of time they spend could escalate, but a judge will decide the official number.

Turner’s attorney didn’t comment much on the ongoing case except to confirm, “We intend to vigorously defend these charges.”

This is a developing story; more information will be available as the trial progresses.
