RZA says it’s an “honour” for A$AP Rocky to name his son after him

A$AP Rocky named his son after RZA, and now the Wu-Tang Clan legend has shared his thoughts on Rocky paying homage.

Rocky and Rihanna had their first child, three-year-old RZA Athelston Mayers, in April 2023, with the couple giving him the same name as Wu’s de facto leader.

During RZA’s appearance on The Jason Lee Show, he revealed that it’s an “honour” and told a story about a time when he met a young Rocky.

“I took that as an honour,” he said. “I took that as an honour and respect and a blessing. A$AP, I’ve watched that young man just become who he is. I met him when he was younger. He actually said something that I was really impressed by, he was like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna be the next you.’ He was coming with the whole A$AP Mob.”

He continued, “He said that right in my eyes, and I was like, ‘Yo, rock the world.’ And he did it. But I was so honoured by that. It’s not just a name, it’s a title… I am honoured that name has fallen upon their child.”

From there, Jason Lee called up Rocky, who said it was only right to name his son after a hip-hop legend, since his mother named him Rakim.

“I’m named after one of the greatest rappers, and my son, he’s named after one of the greatest producers and artists,” he said. “So we had to carry on tradition. Your blessing means a lot. You gotta meet little RZA, though.”

While Rocky and RZA have never worked together, the Harlem rapper has collaborated with fellow Wu member Raekwon on the songs ‘Underground Killa$’ and ‘I Got Money’.
