Romanian court rejects Wiz Khalifa’s appeal over weed prison sentence
Wiz Khalifa has been rejected after appealing his prison sentence in Romania.
The Constanta Court of Appeal charged the Pittsburgh rapper with illegal drug possession after he was caught smoking weed at Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti in July 2024.
In December, Wiz was sentenced to nine months in a Romanian prison. He appealed the decision the following month.
According to Associated Press, a Romanian court upheld his prison sentence on February 26th after convicting him of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.”
Wiz was found with over 18 grams of cannabis, smoking some of the substance on stage. They claimed his appeal was inadmissible and ruled a request to suspend the sentence as unfounded.
He was initially hit with a fine of 3,600 lei for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs,” but it was then changed to a nine-month prison sentence following an appeal from prosecutors.
As of now, it’s unclear whether Wiz will be extradited due to the rapper being a US citizen and not living in Romania.
Videos of his 2024 arrest surfaced online. Following the incident, Wiz took to social media to apologise for smoking weed in the country.
“Last night’s show was amazing,” he wrote. “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
The Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism said in a statement, “It was noted that he, during a recital held at a music festival taking place in Costinești resort, Constanta county, possessed over 18 grams of cannabis (a high-risk drug) and consumed (onstage) another amount of cannabis in the form of an artisanal cigarette.”
