Remy Ma responds to son’s arrest for murder
New York rapper Remy Ma has responded to her son’s arrest and charge of first-degree murder.
Ma’s son, JaySon Scott, was arrested on June 18th by the New York Police Department (NYPD) alongside Richard Swygert for the first-degree murder of 47-year-old Darius Guillebeaux in 2021. Swygert has also been charged.
The murder allegedly occurred in Queens, New York, with law enforcement suspecting that it was related to the city’s drug trafficking trade and happened due to a dispute. In late 2020, Guillebeaux was indicted by New York’s attorney general as a suspect in an investigation into a large-scale narcotics probe.
As well as facing a first-degree murder charge, Scott is also up against a second-degree murder charge, first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. On the other hand, Swygert only faces one charge of murder.
It is reported that following a 911 call on June 7th, 2021, Guillebeaux was discovered by 1pm with several gunshot wounds to the head and chest. He was then rushed to the local Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens but did not make it and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The extensive investigation the NYPD has been carrying out is called ‘Operation Heat Wave’ and has seen 54 suspects arrested. It is specifically concentrated on considerable amounts of fentanyl, heroin and oxycodone being pushed in upstate New York.
Remy Ma has responded with a statement to TMZ about the arrest of Scott: “We stand by JaySon’s innocence and pray that the NYPD will conduct a complete and thorough investigation to reveal the truth. This is undoubtedly a difficult time for my family and me. While we sincerely appreciate the love and support we have received from all of you, we kindly ask for privacy as our legal team works to prove JaySon’s innocence…”
Continuing: “As his mother, I want to address this situation personally but have been strongly advised by his legal counsel not to say anything — as most people in similar situations are informed by their attorneys due to it being an active case.”
Ma herself is no stranger to the law. In 2007, only a year after her debut album arrived, she was arrested for shooting friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph at a Manhattan nightclub. She was found guilty of assault, weapons and attempted coercion and was sentenced to eight years in prison, despite asserting it was an accident. She was released in 2014 after serving six years.
Ma’s son, Scott, is not unknown to the public. He has appeared on TV on several occasions, including on the hit reality show Love and Hip-Hop: New York alongside his mother. Additionally, his step-father is Ma’s husband, influential Brooklyn emcee Papoose and his godfather, Terror Squad leader Fat Joe.
