R Kelly sent to solitary confinement in North Carolina prison
R Kelly has reportedly been sent to solitary confinement while serving his prison sentence in North Carolina.
The 59-year-old singer is currently in the middle of a 31-year sentence at FCI Butner Medium I after being convicted in 2021 and 2022.
He was found guilty of racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, bribery, coercion, sex trafficking, and violating the Mann Act.
While fighting for a new trial, AllHipHop reports that Kelly has now been placed in solitary confinement. Prison officials reportedly transferred Kelly to the Special Housing Unit following an undisclosed infraction.
The Special Housing Unit is known as “the hole” to inmates, which is a segregated wing where prisoners spend around 23 hours a day in a cell under strict conditions.
Placement in solitary confinement limits access to calls, visits, and legal materials, typically due to disciplinary reasons or pending investigations.
Kelly’s longtime lawyer, Beau Brindley, recently went to FCI Butner to review evidence surrounding Kelly’s motion for a new trial.
However, Brindley claims that just 30 minutes before he arrived at the prison, he was informed that officials had placed Kelly in the Special Housing Unit without explanation.
In January, it was revealed that Kelly’s expected prison release date was December 21st, 2045, when he will be 78 years old. Last year, the singer had a bond request rejected after failing to prove that he wasn’t a danger to the public.
A motion stated, “Kelly has not produced any argument or evidence – much less clear and convincing evidence – challenging [the court’s previous] finding or indicating that circumstances have changed such that Kelly is no longer a flight risk or a danger to the community.”
