Lollapalooza drop DaBaby after homophobic rant

DaBaby’s homophobic outburst on-stage at Rolling Loud Festival in Miami has seen the rapper subsequently dropped from the Lollapalooza line-up.

Last weekend, the rapper broke out a disgusting rant about HIV/AIDS and homosexuality during his set. He told the crowd: “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS… put your cellphone light up. Ladies, if your pussy smell like water, put your cellphone light up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone light up.”

Notable figures of the industry, the likes of Elton John and Dua Lipa, have since criticised the rapper, and he lost his brand deal with boohooMAN. The clothing brand wrote, “BoohooMAN condemn the use of homophobic language and confirm we will no longer be working with DaBaby.”

DaBaby was due to perform at Lollapalooza this past weekend, but in light of his abhorrent comments, the festival took to social media to reveal Young Thug had replaced him on the line-up. “Lollapalooza was founded on diversity, inclusivity, respect, and love,” the festival wrote on Twitter. 

They added: “With that in mind, DaBaby will no longer be performing at Grant Park tonight. Young Thug will now perform at 9:00pm on the Bud Light Seltzer Stage, and G Herbo will perform at 4:00pm on the T-Mobile Stage.” 

After the backlash, Da Baby shared a bizarre video for his track, ‘Giving What It’s Supposed to Give’. In the middle of the clip, he holds up a sign that reads, ‘AIDS’, and it ends with a message in rainbow lettering that says, “Don’t Fight Hate With Hate. My apologies for being me the same way you want the freedom to be you.”

DaBaby also half-heartedly apologised on Twitter, posting: “Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies. But the LGBT community… I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.”

Travel restrictions have already led to the rapper pulling out of Reading and Leeds, yet, DaBaby remains booked to perform at festivals later in the summer, including New York’s Governor’s Ball and Austin City Limits. 

It remains to be seen whether other events will follow in Lollapalooza’s footsteps or allow him to play.
