New York rapper 50 Cent is certainly a character, and from his humorous social media antics to his new star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the rapper turned media mogul has definitely reached extraordinary heights in his career and is continuing to advance.
On the entertainment front, the Queens rapper recently shared a trailer for his latest series Hip Hop Homicides. Set to be released through his production company G-unit Film alongside his partner, the controversial Mona Scott-Young’s Monami Entertainment.
Although some are questioning the rapper (real name Curtis Jackson) concerning his choice of partner, Mona Scott-Young, fans are still excited to see what the mogul has been up to while in the luxurious land of the rich that is Hollywood.
Mona Scott-Young and Monami came under heavy fire when they first aired the Love and Hip Hop franchise in 2011. Many people still consider Mona Scott-Young as a controversial figure who profits off perpetuating negative racial stereotypes. However, she has still achieved mogul status and has proven herself to be a machine in pushing a series and brand to dizzying heights.
Jackson has also reached heights in this field with his series Power, doing exceptionally well across streaming services in the US and the UK. However, it is essential to remember that while Jackson is a Hollywood bigshot in the present, he was not in the past.
Born and raised in the South Jamaica neighbourhood of Queens in New York, 50 Cent was discovered by Eminem following the release of his debut mixtape Guess Who’s Back? Shortly after its release, he was signed to Eminem’s Shady Records under Interscope and began work on his debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, which is widely considered legendary.
With Eminem and Dr Dre credited as the album’s executive producers, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ sold 872,000 copies in its first week and 12 million units worldwide. By the end of 2003, the album had already been certified six times platinum.
The album’s lead single, ‘In Da Club’, has 1.5 Billion views on YouTube and has been streamed 936.6 million times on Spotify alone. It is one of the most well-known hip hop songs of all time. It was so popular even Beyoncé wanted to capitalise on its prevalence and did so by recording an unofficial cover entitled ‘Sexy Lil Thug’. Using the same cadences and some of the same lyrics for a reason unbeknownst to fans, it never got released as an official single, meaning it wasn’t fit to enter the charts. However, it still received airplay on local stations and even received club play.
