Lil Durk released from solitary confinement after months in special housing unit
Lil Durk is finally back in the general population in prison after being held in solitary confinement for five months.
Durk (real name Durk Banks) is currently behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles for allegedly conspiring to kill Quando Rondo and resulting in the death of his cousin, Lul Pab.
According to XXL on January 15th, the Chicago rapper has been removed from a special housing unit for the first time since August.
Durk was initially under solitary confinement after being found with an Apple Watch. His lawyers filed a motion for his release on January 6th.
They claimed the incident hadn’t been reviewed by the Unit Discipline Committee to decide disciplinary action, which is usually determined in five days.
“[Lil Durk] is confined to a very small jail cell, just large enough for a single bed, a toilet, and a sink, for 23 hours a day,” the filing read. “He does not have access to commissary. He is permitted one phone call a month, and no in-person social visits.”
The filing continued, “Mr Banks’ defence team has a growing concern that his prolonged solitary confinement may implicate the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on ‘cruel and unusual punishment.'”
His legal team added that “the deleterious effects of extended solitary confinement on an inmate’s psychological well-being are well-documented.”
Durk’s trial is set to begin on April 21st. He’s charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death.
The rapper is also charged with one count of using, carrying, and discharging firearms and a machine gun and possession of such firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death.
