Andrew Schulz on Kendrick Lamar: “Taylor Swift of hip-hop”
Andrew Schulz has taken jabs at Kendrick Lamar once again after the Compton rapper appeared to rap about him on ‘Wacced Out Murals’ from his GNX album. Earlier this year, the comedian made derogatory remarks about Black women and stereotypes associated with aggression on his Flagrant podcast, which irked Lamar.
“They shave their hair because they start losing it,” he said. “Because he’s so stressed to be around this Black girl complaining all the time. They grow their beard because they need a cushion when they get slapped. I think the Black girlfriend effect, it might be a protective instinct.”
Referencing the incident, Kendrick rapped, “Don’t let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that’s law.” Schulz responded to Kendrick’s lyrics by roasting him over incorrect grammar in the song. “Now, technically speaking, if we’re going off of grammatical English, he is saying I can talk about Black women,” he said.
Schulz then joked about misogyny in hip-hop, sarcastically stating that rappers are known for respecting women. “Listen, rappers are telling comedians we need to be more respectful to women,” he said. “So we need to sit back and reflect … Listen, no one has respected women more through art than rappers.”
He continued, “So I completely understand how a rapper could look at a comedian telling a joke and be like, ‘Yo, you need to switch that shit up. How dare y’all keep saying your wives are annoying. Be more like us, bitches ain’t nothing but hos and tricks, I beat my bitch with a stick.’”
Charlamagne Tha God came to Schulz’s defence on their Brilliant Idiots podcast, saying comedians “have the license to make jokes about any and everybody.” On the latest episode, Charlamagne claimed that Lamar’s team called him to discuss his comments, to which Schulz replied, “Kendrick really is the Taylor Swift of hip-hop. No matter what he does, he’s still the victim.”
He continued, “You know how Taylor is always the victim? She’s the biggest [artist] in music in history, yet she’s a victim to the label, she’s a victim to Scooter [Braun], she’s a victim to her boyfriends. Yet, she’s still the biggest in the world. Somehow, Kendrick is the victim here.”
Kendrick collaborated with Swift on the ‘Bad Blood’ remix in 2015. Drake took shots at Lamar over the singer during their feud, rapping on ‘Push Ups’, “We need a verse for the Swifties/ Top say drop, you better drop and give ‘em 50.”
Then, on ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, he rapped, “But now we gotta wait a fuckin’ week ’cause Taylor Swift is your new Top/ And if you ’bout to drop, she gotta approve/ This girl really ’bout to make you act like you not in a feud/ She tailor-made your schedule with Ant, you out of the loop.” In doing so, he claimed that Kendrick was withholding a diss track due to Swift releasing her Tortured Poets Department album.
