Future has toppled the elusive 10 million mark on the streaming platform SoundCloud, becoming the first artist to do so in its history.
The star became the most followed artist back in June and his star has only risen further since then with recent releases like ‘M&M’.
A little lower in the rankings is second-placed Big Sean who has roughly 9.5 million followers on the growing platform. Lana Del Rey and Pusha T are closing in on the 9 million mark.
Future acknowledged his grand achievement with a simple Instagram story simply saying “thank u” to fans and followers.
And that gratitude is most certainly sincere considering that SoundCloud recently revealed that Portishead earned 500% more than the usual streaming royalty rate under their new payment plan.
Thus, with greater equity available to artists on the platform, it is likely that many other musicians and groups will amp up their SoundCloud presence and, as a result, Future might not remain the only artist with over 10 million followers for long.
As SoundCloud revealed to Pitchfork in a statement: “The full aggregation of market-live payout data is pending over the coming months. The model is tracking as expected and the Portishead stat is a strong confirmation of the model’s design – fan engagement is driving meaningful revenue.”
