Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete) began to gain traction through her freestyles on social media, primarily Instagram. Across 2016 and 2017, she really began to make a name for herself as a hair and makeup influencer and rapper.
In 2018, Meg signed with 300 Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group (WMG). As a result, she managed to get features from other WMG artists, including the likes of Nicki Minaj. In 2020, she speedily released another project, her EP Suga. She followed this up with her debut album Good News which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. Megan Thee Stallion’s rise was similar to Cardi B and a lot of other new-generation female rappers in that she first made a name for herself through social media as a personality and influencer before she transitioned into rapping.
Another thing that is noticeable with regard to the rise of Megan Thee Stallion is that a lot of her fans were acquired through features, and a lot of her music is bolstered by features. Her 2020 debut, Good News, features DaBaby, City Girls, Hot Girl Meg, Lil Durk, SZA, Popcaan, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Beyoncé and Young Thug, which is a lot of artists. Meg has also featured on big songs such as Cardi B’s ‘WAP’.
