Eminem drops new single ‘Tobey’ inspired by ‘Spider-Man’
Eminem has released his second single as a lead-up to the release of his upcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). Entitled ‘Tobey’, the new Spider-Man-inspired track sees the Detroit star collaborate with Big Sean and BabyTron.
With its name derived from the main character, Toby Maguire of the 2002 box-office hit, the track hears the ‘Stan’ lyricist rap lines such as “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me, it was a goat” and “Way beyond crazy, Shady gone, but hey, maybe, I am the GOAT/With Big Sean and BabyTron, and that’s why they be on the shit they be on.”
The song is an example of Eminem promoting local talent. Big Sean is also a Detroit native, and BabyTron hails from Ypsilanti, a suburb of the Michigan city. The single’s artwork is a humorous take on the meme of two cartoon Spider-men pointing at each other.
However, this time, instead of two Spider-men, we see Eminem, Big Sean, and BabyTron all pointing at each other. This is the forthcoming project’s second single with the first being ‘Houdini’, which was released on May 31st.
The music video that will accompany ‘Tobey’ is directed by the legendary Cole Bennett, founder of the renowned YouTube channel Lyrical Lemonade. A clip of the video was shared on social media by Eminem sees the artist revving a chainsaw and cutting a body while blood gushes. BabyTron and Big Sean can be seen looking on.
The official video will be released on July 5th. The single is Eminem’s first collaboration with BabyTron and his fourth with Big Sean. Big Sean and Em have worked together on tracks such as ‘No Favors’, ‘Friday Night Cypher’ and ‘Detroit Vs. Everybody’ in the past.
Earlier this week, after taking to social media, Eminem let fans know that they can expect The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), to hit streaming platforms on July 12th.
