Drake shares clips of new music and behind-the-scenes footage
When it comes to releasing music in the social media age, most artists have to strategise and properly plan how they can share their new material in a way that will keep fans engaged and excited. However, Drake is at the level of fame where he no longer needs to worry about this, as anytime he drops the smallest snippet or even an album, fans will swarm to see what he has to offer.
On August 6th, the Canadian rapper treated these fans to almost 100GB of new material. No, this isn’t 20 new albums all in one go. Instead, it includes many clips of new songs and a lot of behind-the-scenes footage taken throughout his career, rather than pure music. It’s a true treasure trove for any fan of the Toronto native and it will take even the most dedicated of people a long time to get through.
A lot of the initial reaction to the drop came from people listening to new music included in the 100GB of material. There are a few collaborations in there, including features from 21 Savage, Latto, and Young Thug, to which fans were quick to show love.
‘It’s Up’, a previously unheard track that includes features from 21 Savage and Thugger, got a lot of attention because of its quality and because people speculate it may contain Kendrick Lamar disses, which has now been denied from Savage’s camp.
A lot of the material remains untouched purely because of how much there is for fans to rummage through. Some on social media have been complaining that it is nearly impossible to go through 100GB of information and instead are waiting to see if others reveal what is and isn’t worth watching.
While a lot of fans are happy to see Drake share a lot of his work, others speculate that the sheer volume means there is little quality contained within. Some believe Drake is trying to shift the narrative that has plagued his career over the last few months following his beef with Lamar.
It could be true that all the negativity surrounding Drake has gotten to him, and he wants to put something out there that changes the conversation. Following the release of songs like ‘Meet The Grahams’ and ‘Not Like Us’, many decided that Lamar had won the beef the two rappers had. Since then, the Compton rapper has continued to rub salt in the wound as gigs like The Pop Out and the music video for ‘Not Like Us’ continue to take shots at Drake.
Whether the material is of quality remains to be seen, as some determined fans are currently combing through footage to find sections worth clipping.
