The easter eggs in the Kendrick Lamar ‘Not like Us’ video
Kendrick Lamar has released a new music video for his Drake diss track, ‘Not Like Us,’ and, for his many fans, the Compton native has decided to include some hidden Easter eggs, reminding fans of the fact it is aimed at Drizzy.
The new visuals were directed by Lamar and co-directed by his pgLang partner, Dave Free. The video, released on July 4th, has already accrued over two million views on YouTube and features a short intro of what appears to be a new song. However, fans only get six bars.
Some of the scenes were filmed in his home turf of Compton, but the visuals also include footage filmed at his legendary Juneteenth concert in Inglewood. One sign for fans that he has defeated Drake is his beating a piñata shaped like an owl’s head. The logo of Drizzy’s label October’s Very Own (OVO) is an owl.
Prior to the video’s release, Kendrick Lamar teased some of the snippets from the video, accompanied by some photos uploaded to Instagram on the morning of July 4th for his followers.
The pgLang founder also posted a photo of him with his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and his two children as a sign he and his family are utterly unbothered by Drake’s attempt to drag and insult his family.
On his diss track ‘Family Matters,’ Drake accused Kendrick of domestic abuse and beating Alford. He also suggested that one of Lamar’s kids is the child of his manager, Dave Free.
The final picture posted by the ‘Euphoria’ creator shows Kendrick in Compton alongside his Top Dawg Entertainment entourage, including the label’s founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul.
The ‘Not Like Us’ producer Mustard was also spotted at the video shoot wearing a Toronto Blue Jays cap, sparking speculation that he, too, was trolling Drake. However, he denies this claim.
In an interview with Oakland radio host Big Boy, DJ Mustard refuted the accusation of trolling, insisting, “I wasn’t trolling. I really wasn’t trolling. I bought a lot of hats that I like. I bought an STL hat, an Angels hat, a Braves hat. I put Faith of a Mustard Seed on all of them.”
The award-winning producer and DJ claimed that a couple of his hats were sweaty from his performance at Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Pop Out’ festival. Detailing this, he told Big Boy, “I sweated out two of my hats at ‘Pop Out’, and that was the last hat that I had with Faith of a Mustard Seed on it. It just happened to be a Toronto Blue Jays hat.”
Although Mustard denies trolling, the choice of clothing all seems very coincidental, considering the recent release of Lamar’s latest video, which is undeniably aimed at Drake personally. You can watch the video of ‘Not Like Us’ below.
