Drake seemingly takes shot at Kendrick Lamar with new “wife beater” range
While the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has somewhat died down, that doesn’t mean Drake isn’t willing to miss an opportunity to seemingly take shots at the Compton rapper if the opportunity arises. Earlier in the week, OVO shared a selection photos advertising their casual woman’s clothing items. One of the pieces was a white vest, which is commonly referred to as a “wife beater.”
Throughout their beef, Drake persisted with claims that Lamar was abusive towards his fiancée, Whitney. As this allegation played such a prominent role in Drake’s arguments, many fans believe the item is intentional and a sneaky way of dissing the ‘Not Like Us’ rapper without officially saying anything. Lamar has never been found guilty of any physically abusive behaviour.
If the advertisement is a way to take shots at Lamar, it’s oddly reminiscent of one of the rapper’s lines in his track ‘Euphoria’. When addressing Drake, Lamar calls out the Toronto-based MC for “sneak dissing.” He says, “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk. I hate the way that you dress, I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight it’s gon’ be direct.” It is still yet to be confirmed whether the ad is intentional or just a coincidence.
Many fans call the diss clever, whereas others call Drake out for failing to address Lamar’s happenings in the past few weeks. Lamar has done The Pop Out show in LA, where he performed the diss track ‘Not Like Us’ five times. He has also recently released a music video for the diss. It also seems that everything Drake posts at the minute is immediately criticised by Kendrick supporters.
The wife-beater vest appears not only in Drake’s OVO advertisement but also in the music video for ‘Not Like Us’. Addressing Drake’s claims of domestic abuse, the video shows Kendrick, his fiancée Whitney, and their kids dancing together to the Drake diss. Whitney wears a wife-beater, which is likely a reference to Drake’s lyrics as the two try to dismantle his claims.
While many people support Lamar’s win in the beef, Drake’s loyal fanbase appears intact. For the sixth month in a row, Drake has been crowned the most-streamed rapper of June, meaning that despite losing the beef, he is still incredibly popular.
This remains a developing story, as it’s yet to be seen whether the Kendrick and Drake beef will escalate any further.
