Dr Dre’s restraining order dropped in victory over therapist

Earlier this year, Dr Dre was sued by his former divorce counsellor for $10million after being hit with claims of alleged harassment. In 2021, the producer went through a lengthy divorce process with his ex-wife, Nicole Young, and eventually decided to settle their dispute out of court for $100million.

However, the counsellor who mediated his divorce, Dr Charles J. Sophy, alleged that he was subjected to an “ongoing barrage of threats” following the process and claimed that the anger of Dre was directed towards him throughout the out-of-court proceedings.

That said, in October, Sophy was granted a provisional restraining order preventing The Chronic creator from going within 100 yards of Sophy or his son. Furthermore, it prohibited the beatmaker from contacting the therapist via text, email or on the phone.

However, in a turn of events, the restraining order has been lifted, and Dre is no longer required to keep his distance from the divorce therapist. On November 5th, Los Angeles Judge Melanie Ochoa completely dismissed the restraining order, claiming it was not necessary.

While giving her verdict, Ochoa explained, “The court finds the party requesting the order of protection did not sustain the applicable burden of proof, and accordingly, the request is denied. Any temporary restraining order earlier issued is hereby dissolved.”

The divorce consellor appeared in person at the court hearing. However, Dr Dre appeared remotely and testified over video. In a statement filed by the musician, he insisted that Sophy’s claim was a “misguided attempt to undermine” his reputation, which was prompted by Dre filing a complaint with California’s medical board.

Sophy’s original lawsuit that Dre’s alleged “systematic and malicious” barrage of “unbearable harassment” prompted him to wear a bulletproof vest. He also insisted that after Dre and his wife settled their dispute, Dre began “a nearly year-long sustained campaign of late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric.”

Dre admitted in his statement on November 4th that he sent some of the texts, but he said they should be considered in the context of Sophy’s alleged actions. Detailing some of Sophy’s alleged behaviour, Dre began, “In 2023, I discovered that Sophy had attempted to poison my relationship with my son, including by urging him to disclose my financial records to the media as part of his attempts to pressure me into settling my divorce on unfair terms.”

He continued, “The text messages from 2023 that Sophy attaches to his TRO petition were sent in the context of my discovery of his malpractice and my unsuccessful attempts to have Sophy explain to me why he was undertaking these inappropriate actions.”
