Dr Dre sued for $10 Million by former divorce counsellor
Compton native Dr. Dre has recently been hit with a $10million lawsuit. The iconic producer is used to being on the receiving end of lawsuits related to music. However, now, he is being sued by a divorce counsellor for alleged harassment. This is new legal territory for the mogul.
Many know that Dr Dre went through a lengthy divorce process with his ex-wife in 2021. However, most thought that it was over when the producer decided to settle their dispute out of court for the eye-watering amount of $100million.
Many assumed that divorce was finalised when the settlement was paid out. However, it seems that is not the case, as the counsellor who mediated their divorce, Dr Charles J. Sophy, has filed a lawsuit for $10million.
Sophy alleges that he was subjected to an “ongoing barrage of threats” during the process and claims that the anger of Dre was directed towards him throughout the out-of-court proceedings.
Sophy’s lawyer, Christopher Frost, has thoroughly detailed in the lawsuit filed what the counsellor supposedly experienced. Part of the document filed on October 9th reads, “Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing. [Dre] decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy.”
The professed ongoing nature made Sophy feel harassed, according to Frost. The file continues, “[His] frustrations that manifested themselves in the form of a nearly year-long sustained campaign. [There were] late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric.”
Sophy has alleged he, Dr Dre and Dre’s ex-wife began attempting to settle the divorce in 2018, but claims that the producer began to contact him out of hours by text questioning him about confidentiality.
Dre allegedly wrote, “I’m not going anywhere until you explain to me why you tried to talk [an unnamed person] into saying negative things about me to the media.” Sophy has denied that he ever done this or even attempted to.
Furthermore, the counsellor deemed them “baseless” and “far-fetched.” The recent lawsuit is seeking $10million worth of damages and a restraining order to protect Dr Sophy. According to his lawyer Frost, the latter is most important to Sophy as Dre has been accused of beating up multiple women over the years, including the journalist Dee Barnes, Death row musician Michel’le and his ex-wife.
Dr Dre has denied every allegation of physical abuse towards women and has never been charged or jailed for it.
