Damon Dash says hip-hop and Kanye West don't need the Grammys

Damon Dash has said hip-hop doesn’t need the Grammys after Kanye West was told he isn’t welcome at the event.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Ye had been banned due to “concerning online behaviour“. Despite being prohibited from attending the ceremony, West is still up for five gongs this year as he looks to add to his winning total of 22 to date.

Additionally, a petition has grown monumentally to get Kanye banned from Coachella. He is set to headline the Californian bash alongside Billie Eilish and Harry Styles, but over 35,000 want him removed from the line-up.

Former Roc-A-Falla CEO Damon Dash spoke about the controversy around the Grammys to TMZ after they accosted him at LAX. “Kanye don’t give a fu*k about the Grammys. We make our own Grammys,” he said.

Dash continued: “I’m not trying to fit into somebody else’s system. So we just create our own so we ain’t gotta worry about nobody else’s rules. It’s not for them to judge who’s hot. It’s for us. They really shouldn’t be giving us the awards. We should be giving them the awards. They gotta respect our culture.”

He then spoke about his own experience with the ceremony and recalled Roc-A-Fella refusing to turn up in 1999. “When we got nominated, I didn’t even go. I don’t give a fu*k about the Grammys. I’m not trying to fit in,” Dash recalled.
