The Dallas actor that ‘The Odyssey’ star Travis Scott adores: “The dude is fucking hilarious”

Travis Scott is in the midst of a dramatic reinvention.

While he’s always been a visual artist, known for his look and the quality of his self-directed music videos, his new career turn goes a step further. As a co-star of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, he’s trying to become a serious actor.

But in addition to his part in The Odyssey, Scott will also appear in another film later this year — one that will be completely different to Nolan’s historical epic. He’s set to appear in Rolling Loud: The Movie, starring Owen Wilson.

The film will focus on the real-life Rolling Loud hip-hop festival, frequently declared as one of the biggest music festivals on the planet. While it began in Miami back in 2015, it has since expanded with editions taking place all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people can be expected to attend a single festival, with some of hip-hop’s biggest names performing at them.

The Rolling Loud movie will follow Dallas actor Wilson’s character as he attempts to bond with his teenage son. Ordinarily an overprotective sort, the character is seeking to get close to his kid by taking him to this massive festival. In addition to Scott, other rappers including Sexyy Red, Ty Dolla Sign and Ski Mask the Slump God are set to appear in it.

While it will be worlds away from the drama of Nolan’s Greek epic, Scott is claiming to be no less excited by this project. He is especially happy to be working with Wilson, whom he praised profusely during an interview with L’Officiel in late June. “I love Owen Wilson,” Scott insisted. “The dude is fucking hilarious.”

The rapper also spoke about his relationship to the real Rolling Loud festival, which he began playing at during its earliest days. He and the festival, from the rapper’s own perspective, grew together, so he is excited to make a movie focused on it.

The film, according to Scott, is “funny as fuck,” and it has been good for him to “just do something different.” But his excitement, ultimately, always comes back to Wilson and his love for the star. “He actually came out and rocked out with me,” Scott said of his co-star, presumably referencing the fact the actor joined him on stage during 2024’s Rolling Loud.

While Scott has been bigging the upcoming film up, critics have noted something potentially bleak about it. The casting of Travis Scott specifically has proven to be a touchy subject, in light of the fatal crowd crush that happened at his Astroworld Festival in 2021. Ten people died as a result.

It’s been suggested that perhaps Scott’s casting is a way to redirect web searches related to the rapper and festival crowds away from the terrible incident. That can, perhaps, seem quite conspiratorial, but it is worth noting that Live Nation is involved in the making of Rolling Loud: The Movie. Live Nation helped to organise the Astroworld Festival.
