Vince Staples doubles down on rap beef being “corny”
Vince Staples still thinks rap beef is “corny.”
The Long Beach rapper has always kept himself to himself and never engaged in a feud with another rapper.
In 2017, he stated that rap beefing was corny in the context of Remy Ma vs Nicki Minaj, Ice Cube vs NWA, and Jay-Z vs Nas.
“Beef is corny,” he said at the time. “It’s like, ‘I’m gonna say really hurtful things about you for the sake of hip-hop.’”
During a recent interview with Complex, he revealed that he feels the same way about his comments after Kendrick Lamar and Drake went to war.
“I’mma always feel the same way about Black people fighting over nothing,” he said. “But everybody love a mudslinging contest. So, I stay out of it. Entertainment is entertainment. So, if everybody’s entertained, it’s all good.”
During his conversation nine years ago, Vince stated that if people are interested in beefing, they should watch battle rap.
“So watch a Smack battle,” he said. “They’re much better at it. King of the Dot. You have the UW League in New Jersey. So many battle leagues. Go watch some Charlie Clips. I don’t wanna see people demean one another for no reason when they can have a phone conversation. Especially when they’re actually successful musicians. “
He continued, “There is battle rap. I am a fan of that, but as far as the spitefulness of it? ‘Cause battle rappers are actually like all friends for the most part, and they write it, have fun, and talk about it on Facebook later. It’s real fucking cute, but all that other shit they can get the fuck out of here. That shit is corny as fuck.”
Vince just released his new album Cry Baby and is getting ready to tour North America later this year.
