Tupac Shakur’s family files wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles

Tupac Shakur was killed 30 years ago, and now his family are filing a wrongful death lawsuit.

The legendary rapper was shot in Las Vegas on September 7th, 1996, and later died in the hospital on September 13th, 1996.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Tupac’s stepbrother, Maurice Shakur (also known as Mopreme), filed a complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court on April 28th.

Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis, the man charged with first-degree murder, has been named as a defendant, with Maurice seeking damages against Davis and other unnamed figures for allegedly participating in his murder.

The lawsuit claims that for “the first time in nearly 30 years, threads are starting to come together.”

Maurice continues, “Many individuals who were involved have long since passed away, while others have been hard to identify. Yet, one thing is certain: there remain individuals who were involved in Tupac’s murder who, for 30 years, have not been held accountable for their crimes. This action seeks to change that.”

Some of his new sources of alleged information include transcripts from Davis’ criminal proceedings and interviews from Netflix’s Sean Combs: The Reckoning docuseries.

The lawsuit claims news developments have “revealed the existence of a broader, more complex conspiracy to murder Tupac that involved much more than mere retaliation for a prior altercation”

Keefe D’s murder trial is scheduled for August 10th, 2026. He pleaded not guilty to the murder charges and maintains his innocence.

“I’m innocent,” he said last year. “I ain’t kill nobody. Never did, never killed nobody. They don’t have no evidence against me. Can’t even put me in Las Vegas. Prove that I orchestrated this. Your key witness orchestrated this. Their top witness is a lead suspect.”
