Travis Scott once revealed his favourite DMX track ever
Travis Scott is one of the most influential contemporary hip-hop artists. Akin to acts such as Playboi Carti and Lil Yachty, Scott arose during the mid-2010s and was rapidly thrust into the limelight.
Since his arrival on the scene, the Texas artist has quickly become an icon and is considered one of the most creative and original acts within the trap arena. With multi-platinum albums such as Rodeo, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, Astroworld and Utopia, he is currently one of the most relevant and successful hip-hop artists.
Despite his Houston roots, Scott (real name Jacques Webster) was inspired by a range of artists from across the US, including the late, great Yonkers lyricist DMX. In 2021, hip-hop got taken aback when DMX was hospitalised, and, during this period, Scott told his followers about his love for the ‘Ride Or Die’ legend.
DMX was an iconic East Coast rapper during the late 1990s and early-2000s who made a seismic impact when he first ascended under Ruff Ryders Entertainment. His menacing, gravelly delivery and unmatched energy made him a formidable force during his lifetime, and there was no one who could mimic what he did.
It was a massive shock when, in April of 2021, rap fans received news that Simmons was in White Plains hospital following a drug-induced heart attack and shortly after the news broke, Webster was interviewed by hip-hop media outlet TMZ.
When asked by the interviewer what his favourite DMX track of all time was, Scott, without hesitating, responded, ‘What’s My Name?’ Following this, as he pulled away in his luxury Bugatti Chironthe, the ‘SICKO MODE’ emcee yelled, “Love DMX. X for life!”
‘What’s My Name?’ was the lead single of DMX’s 1999 album, …And Then There Was X. Produced by Irv Gotti, the song was recorded in Miami and heard the Yonkers rhymer lash out against the haters and pretenders in his life. It quickly became an anthem.
The music video was also extremely provocative yet star-studded and saw guest appearances from the likes of Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Ruff Ryders, Irv Gotti and the entire Murder Inc. crew. You can hear Travis Scott praising DMX in the video below.
