The truth behind Jay-Z’s false retirement

Jay-Z’s career has been one of ups-and-downs. For many years, the Brooklyn lyricist delivered quality albums with ease and was relentless in his delivery of music following the release of his debut, Reasonable Doubt.

Jay released his debut project, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996. This put Jay-Z on the map, and with a tenacious work rate, he released full bodies of work annually for six consecutive years, the last of which was The Black Album. However, as the ‘Dirt Off My Shoulder’ rapper prepared to release the 2003 body of work, he told fans in no uncertain terms that it would be his last album.

Furthermore, the lyricist announced that he would be retiring from music altogether. As such, he released a DVD documentary to accompany the album, which showcased the process of making the album and showed how he had recruited the best producers in the industry, such as Kanye West, Timbaland, and Pharrell Williams, in order to go out with a bang.

The Black Album blew away fans and critics alike, but many were disappointed to learn that it was to be Jay’s last release. However, to the shock of many, only three years later, Jay returned with a new project despite his 2003 assurance to fans that he was retiring.

That said, last year, Jay-Z sat down with Kevin Hart for an in-depth interview on his PeacockTV series Hart To Heart, during which he explained why he retired in 2003 but then unexpectedly returned. Recalling his frame of mind in 2003, Jay told the comedian, “I really thought, you know, I was really burned out that time. I was releasing an album every year … and in between that, soundtracks, other people’s albums, Roc-a-Fella, touring, like back-to-back. I just looked up one day and was tired.”

Hov then explained that as an adolescent, he never left Brooklyn or went on vacation, and even after Reasonable Doubt, he never stopped hustling. He shockingly disclosed that he took his first-ever vacation in 2000 at the age of 31—his first time abroad for non-work reasons.

Jay hasn’t released any music since 2017, when the ‘Marcy Me’ icon released 4:44. However, he has continued to pursue his different business ventures, including TIDAL and his entertainment agency, Roc Nation. That said, even last year, he wasn’t prepared to say he would never touch a microphone again.

Opening up to Hart, Hov detailed, “I’m not actively making music or making an album or have plans to make an album, but I never want to say that I’m retired,” he admitted. “It’s a gift, so who am I to shut it off? And it may have a different form or interpretation. Maybe it’s not an album, maybe it is. I have no idea, but I’m just going to leave it open.”

His open-ended response didn’t suggest that he was working on any music but left the door open to collaborations and various appearances. Earlier this year, Beyoncé released her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. Unsurprisingly, Jay-Z didn’t appear on it, but he still may make an appearance on a hip-hop album later this year.
