The scary moment Drake was robbed at gunpoint

Many rappers have been the victims of robbery or attempted robberies over the years. However, few know that before his entrance into the spotlight, Drake was targeted at gunpoint by some dangerous people after his watch and chain.

On his track ‘From Florida With Love’ from the Dark Lane Demo Tapes, Drake rapped, “Went and got a chain for me, I had to give it up (Yeah) / Niggas had they pistols loaded pointed at my truck.” However, this wasn’t made up. It was a real-life situation.

In 2009, before Drake was thrust into the mainstream, he was reportedly set up and robbed. 2009 was an exhilarating time for Drake. Having just released So Far Gone, he was gathering a massive following as the face of Young Money and was already in the process of recording his debut album, Thank Me Later.

Although Drake was still not a household name in the US hip-hop market in 2009, in Canada, he was easily recognisable and was already on his way to becoming the country’s next big rapper.

According to various reports, on May 31st 2009, Drake had just finished a meal with a woman named Chantal Brown in Toronto’s Little Italy and was sitting in his car with her. However, shortly after, two unknown males came up to the window with guns aimed at his face.

In an interview with MTV News reflecting on the incident, Drake suggested it was an inside job, asserting, “I knew it was a setup because I had on a sweater and a jacket. But when they banged on the car window with a gun and opened the door, the first thing he said was, ‘Yo run that chain.'”

Insiutaing it was Chantal Brown who set it up, the More Life creator continued, “They didn’t rob my date, and her purse was sitting right there. So I was like, ‘Ok, you set the whole thing up.'” However, as they were robbing Drake, the owner of a restaurant in the area had called the police. As they were running away, law enforcement quickly caught up with them and arrested the culprits.

Unfortunately for Drake, as police paperwork emerged, The New York Times reported on the incident. An article in the publication stated that some saw Drake’s involvement with the police as “a violation of hip-hop’s no-snitching ethos.”

When approached for comment, Drake told the Times, “I feel unsafe in Toronto at all times. I’m a one of one. There’s no one else you can hate as much as me if you hate money, or you hate success.”

There were recent reports of a shooting outside Drake’s Toronto mansion. However, the perpetrators were unsuccessful in acquiring any of Drake’s belongings and didn’t injure anybody.
