The strange reason GloRilla thought only the super-rich owned beds
GloRilla is one of the hottest new female artists out right now, and the ‘Tomorrow’ emcee has the most leverage out of all the blossoming female rappers in the US. GloRilla was highly known in her home state of Tennessee, and (following the Lil Wayne blueprint) she burst onto the scene through mixtapes that were popular across the South.
Following the release of her projects Most Likely Up Next (2019) and P Status (2020), the lyricist caught the eye of megastar Cardi B. Shortly after, they collaborated and released their track ‘Tomorrow 2’ last year, which exploded.
Since the release of her song alongside Cardi, GloRilla has become one of the hottest new female artists. In 2024, she arguably has the most leverage out of all the up-and-coming female rappers in the US. Akin to figures such as Ice Spice, GloRilla acquired many fans on TikTok, and with her thick Memphis accent, petite stature, and unique features, she has become a recognisable star in the culture.
However, prior to fame, she did not have it easy. Before her mainstream breakout, GloRilla was signed to Yo Gotti’s record label Collective Music Group (CMG), home of the controversial Moneybagg Yo. The pair collaborated last year on the track ‘On Wat U On’, which didn’t perform well commercially, and she was putting her faith in local fans to help her rise up the ranks of hip-hop.
Still, going even further into GloRilla’s past, her home life was unique and hard, to say the least. During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s award-winning podcast Club Shay Shay, GloRilla unveiled that her mother was extremely religious and disclosed that her family had such an aversion to the “sinful” outside world that she wasn’t allowed to go to school until she was in her teens.
Furthermore, GloRilla revealed to Sharpe that she was one of ten children and explained how, due to the family’s socio-economic predicament, she was under the illusion only the super-rich had beds until she was 15 years old.
Speaking about her Memphis upbringing, GloRilla detailed, “From when I was born to when I was 15, I had never slept in a real bed. I thought everybody slept on air mattresses. I never knew people had real beds. Growing up there was a lot of us, the boys had one room and the girls had one room and we all slept on one queen-sized air mattress.”
She continued to explain, “When I turned 15 I moved to my daddy’s and my daddy was stayin in a hotel and that was the first bed I had ever slept in in my whole life!”
