The bizarre way Kodak Black got his epic stage name
Kodak Black has had some bad press recently, and many fans are slightly worried about the ‘No Flockin’ emcee. From drugs to jail and more, the Florida rapper has had a lot of eyes on him. In fact, even Kanye West showed some concern for him.
In late February, a troubling video of Kodak Black surfaced, which showed him sitting in the middle of a road eating chicken high. This follows a hectic 2024, during which he updated fans about his rehab journey. The ‘ZeZe’ rapper insisted that he had finally gotten over his addiction and abuse of prescription pills.
However, it is not a new thing for Kodak Black. Detailing how severe his drug use was before he went into rehab, the lyricist once told his followers, “Before I just went to jail, bro, I was taking… I can talk about this because it’s my testimony. Bro, I’m hollering at y’all, ain’t no shame in my shit. I was taking, bro, at least 100 Percs. Bro, my average was 40 Percocets. I’m telling y’all this man!”
Many believe that Kodak had drug issues before he was famous and before he was known as Kodak Black. That said, during an interview, the emcee explained how he got his stage name in the first place. Opening up about his first name, the Dying to Live creator explained, “Well, everybody, they used to just call me Lil’ Black. When I was six, I used to run around, and they’d call me Black, and then, when Instagram came out, I chose ‘Kodak Black.’ When I started rapping, they liked that name better.”
The Pompano Beach native continued, “When I was just ‘Black,’ that was simple, that was original, and the name, it makes itself. Just cuz I say ‘Kodak Black’ people search my name up, like ‘what does that mean, Kodak Black?’ It’s a long name; you wanna know what I’m talking about.”
The Bill Israel emcee then explained what it was like growing up in the Golden Acres projects in Pompano Beach, revealing, “Man, it’s crazy. That’s where I’m at right now, Golden Acres. It’s like, multicultural– Haitians, Americans, Puerto Ricans. It used to be a Puerto Rican project back then, when my mama moved from Haiti. She stayed here in Golden Acres, and my daddy stayed in the projects – the other projects– across the street, Ely Estates. It used to be, like, Haitians versus Americans.”
He continued, “I’d brawl, like, every day growing up. It’s cooled down, but when I was 16– I’m 17 now, though– when I was 16 my mom ‘n’ them got kicked out of Golden Acres. I’m there right now, though. I’m just here chillin’ ‘cuz these my homeboys. These my friends and stuff, you know?”
That said, Kodak Black could have just been known as Lil’ Black but he decided, randomly, on a whim to call himself Kodak Black when Instagram arrived.
