The Lil Wayne song inspired by Missy Elliot and Timbaland

Lil Wayne is a highly prolific artist who has always made quality music. From his Dedication mixtape series to the Tha Carter album series, the New Orleans legend is now a mogul. With his unparalleled work ethic, the emcee (real name Dwayne Carter) has released 13 studio albums, three collaborative albums, three compilation albums, five EPs, and a mind-blowing 29 mixtapes.

In the early 2000s, Wayne had one of the most successful mixtape runs in rap history, and by the end of the noughties, the rapper had his own imprint of Cash Money, Young Money. The label launched the careers of Nicki Minaj, Tyga and Drake, to name a few.

During the 2010s, Wayne released a lot of albums, including Rebirth, I Am Not A Human Being, Tha Carter IV, I Am Not A Human Being II, Free Weezy Album and Tha Carter V. However, in 2013, he released a platinum-certified project that boasted a track that Missy Elliott and Timbaland inspired.

The song entitled ‘Lay It Down’ appeared on I Am Not A Human Being II and was produced by the Mad Decent founder Diplo. The DJ and beatmaker has worked with the likes of Azealia Banks, Big Sean, Wale and more.

For ‘Lay It Down,’ Carter rapped over the instrumental for ‘Easy Easy.’ The beat was made initially by Hudson Mohake and Lunice, who formed the duo TNGHT. The backing track is an electro-rap song from the duo’s self-titled EP.

In an interview with MTV News, Lil Wayne unveiled that it reminded him of a Timbo production from the turn of the millennium, stating, “To me it gives me the vibe or the feeling when Tim and Missy were really in that zone. I loved it. I killed it.”

Young Money MCs Nicki Minaj and Cory Gunz feature on the 2013 song. You can listen to ‘Lay It Down’ in the video below.
