The iconic rapper who inspired Quavo to finish high school
Quavo, as part of The Migos, shaped the sound of modern hip-hop. Alongside other Atlanta rappers, such as Future and Young Thug, he has prospered and become a household name. He is influenced by several different artists when it comes to making music, however, one in particular inspired him to return to high school after dropping out.
The ‘Himothy’ rhymer graduated from Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Georgia, and, of course, got his diploma. However, unlike many other students at his graduation ceremony, he was 29 years old. The emcee decided to return to school, even after acquiring fame, and, according to him, it was all because of Lil Wayne.
In September 2019, Quavo decided to begin classes and proudly graduated in 2020. That said, during an interview with Lil Wayne on Apple Music’s Young Money Radio, the Class of 2020 graduate opened up about his decision to finish school as a now-famous former dropout.
As a newly wealthy rapper, Quavo explained that he was involved in many initiatives for local schools in Georgia and detailed how he always encouraged kids to finish high school. Still, he always knew that he was a dropout and felt that he needed to fix that. Furthermore, one of his old teachers had become the principal of Berkmar High School, so he felt comfortable.
Speaking to Wayne about his local work in Atlanta, he explained, “I was doing stuff for the community and the school and everything. The school was always involved, and just me being considered like a dropout, you’re not really an alumni.”
Quavo continued, “The principal was a teacher of mine back in the day. He ended up being principal now, and shout out to Principal Williams. Man, he hit me up and was like, ‘Man, you should go back and get it.’ And I just went back and got it.”
Many years ago, Lil Wayne opened up about his decision to return to high school as an adult, which was also a factor in Quavo’s decision. Telling Lil Wayne upfront how he inspired him, Quavo stated, “You was most definitely one of my inspirations for going back to school.”
Wayne was humbled to hear that he inspired Quavo’s decision and responded, “That’s love right there. I’m glad I was in any kind of way of helping that idea, that decision, man. That’s love right there, man.”
Although Quavo was on a positive road in 2020, he has been involved in some problems over the New Year. On December 31st, while celebrating New Year’s Eve, he was spotted at a popular Miami club, Club E11EVEN, with Cardi B, who has been going through a messy divorce with his cousin, former Migos member Offset.
Further complicating matters, a video began circulating on social media of Cardi B and Quavo taking shots together. As such, the internet began to make all sorts of allegations, with many even insinuating they might be dating. One prevailing narrative on X (formerly Twitter) was that Cardi was partying with Quavo out of spite for her ex-husband, with one user even writing, “Ex stripper Cardi B on her revenge tour to get back at her husband by hanging wit offset cousin ‘Quavo’.”
However, Offset recently spoke about the video on Gillie Da Kid and Wallo’s Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, insisting that no rumour would ever destroy that relationship or the trust he has in his cousin, declaring, “We ain’t on no sucker sh*t with each other. We both came in this sh*t together, and we both knew that, we understood that, and we lost our brother,” he continued. “I still go through sh*t; I know bro go through sh*t. N*gga love each other, though at the end of the day. We men, we real brothers, and we cool with it, so be cool with it.”
