The hobby that cost Post Malone $800k: “It was an artist print”
Texas singer and rapper Post Malone is predominantly known for his music. Whether it’s hip-hop or his new venture into country, the Autin creator has seen a vast amount of success over the years.
Although Post Malone is known for hits such as ‘White Iverson’ and ‘Rockstar’, aside from music, before fame, Malone had a range of hobbies, but one of them led to him making a huge transfer of money, totalling $800k.
In an interview, the emcee brought up the name of a game that is completely alien to many people but known all too well by its fanatics. The game referenced by the emcee was Magic: The Gathering. The online card game created by Richard Garfield in 1993 has a loyal fanbase, and the fantasy nature, akin to Dungeons & Dragons, makes it a magnet for escapists and those who love to be drawn into strange worlds.
In the tabletop and online card game, players become powerful wizards who can travel between dimensions of the Multiverse. You win a beat other competitors using a range of spells and curses. Although some of the elements are similar to Dungeons & Dragons, there are substantially more cards and far more complex rules that would confuse anybody not familiar with it.
Although the game began as a tabletop card game, since the mid-2000s, it has moved online, making it an international phenomenon. In 2018, it was reported to have approximately 35 million players but has 20 billion Magic cards.
However, some are more worthy than others, especially the rare physical specimens. That said, Post Malone, who is a fan of the game, was desperate for one card in particular. During an interview with radio personality Howard Stern, the ‘White Iverson’ artist opened up about his love for the game.
While speaking about Magic: The Gathering, Stern asked the Texan to put a number on the most he’s spent on a card, to which he responded, “800,000”. Staggered at the fact that Malone paid nearly $1million for a piece of paper, the vocalist explained, “It was an artist print, Chris Rush-signed Black Lotus.”
The card, entitled ‘Black Lotus’, is a very well-known card and is extremely rare. Furthermore, it was a limited release and has not been reprinted in anytime since 1994. His Black Lotus is the most expensive card in Magic’s history.
The signature of the late Chris Rush is why the card is worth $800,000. Rush was one of the 25 original artists who provided the early sets’ art, including the Black Lotus. Fantasy games such as Magic: The Gathering are usually seen as “nerdy”. However, Post Malone is completely unbothered by the term. As a true collector, he believes that his money is best spent on his passion.
