The Gucci Mane interview that almost ruined ‘The Breakfast Club’
Interviews with rappers often get heated and sometimes get disrespectful, but when Gucci Mane appeared on New York radio show The Breakfast Club, everybody in hip-hop was shocked when the Atlanta icon insisted that the show’s co-host, Angela Yee, had once propositioned him.
In 2016, following the release of his album, The Return of East Atlanta Santa, Gucci headed up to the Power 105 studios in New York to talk with DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee about the project. Still, there was some underlying tension between Yee and the emcee, as he had been speaking about her behind the scenes in a derogatory way.
What started off as a chat about his music quickly turned into a discussion about his last encounter with Angela Yee. However, the recollections of events varied. Charlamagne Tha God crudely asked Gucci Mane, “[Have] you smashed Angela Yee?!” to which he responded, “told the two male hosts, ‘Hell nah! She done tried. She was on my dick back then. [She] used to be texting me, ‘What hotel are you at?'”
Unfortunately, Angela Yee didn’t recall it in quite the same way, saying, “You must have gotten me confused with somebody else!” But Gucci Mane had a vivid recollection of the moment it allegedly happened.
Reminding Yee of the encounter, he asked, “Remember when we did that interview a long time ago with Melyssa Ford and all that, and you was calling me?! On your Lip Service shit!” The latter is the name of a podcast Yee used to host.
Angela Yee attempted to clarify the exchange on a later episode of The Breakfast Club, explaining, “Let’s clear that up Gucci Mane was never on Lip Service when you see the video clip it clearly says The Morning After which is a morning show I had on Shade45! Lip Service is a nighttime show!”
All went quiet for a while. However, in 2019, he reignited his feud. During a lengthy in-depth interview with Charlamagne Tha God, Gucci called Yee a “punk ass bitch” and threatening to slap Envy the next time they crossed paths. Concerning the rumours, Gucci added, “It came from that pussy-ass bitch! And DJ Envy—he’s a pussy, too! Envy’s pussy, man.”
Furthermore, he told his fans that she had banned him from appearing on the show. Taking to Instagram, he posted a clip of the 2016 interview with the caption: “Wow! So you mean to tell me The Breakfast Club BANNED me 4 this? #TruthHurts #Getoffmydick.”
He expanded on his ban during an appearance on the Complex YouTube series’ Everyday Struggle’, explaining, “Every time [my team] are like ‘Hey Gucci wants to come up here! There’s an album coming out. They always decline! They say they don’t feel comfortable, and they don’t trust me.”
The interview caused rifts between the hosts and could have led to a disbandment. However, in 2022, Angela Yee did leave The Breakfast Club and part of the reason why was due to misogyny and the stress of working in an all-male environment.
