SZA shares moving tribute to Mac Miller on late rapper’s birthday

New Jersey singer SZA is one of the most successful contemporary singers of recent times. Her early EPs caught the attention of many record labels, and she has only continued to prosper since then. In the early 2010s, SZA released two solo extended plays, See.SZA.Run and S to critical acclaim. That said, she was close friends with one emcee in particular — the late Mac Miller.

SZA has appeared as a featured artist on Miller’s new posthumous album Balloonerism. As such, the vocalist recently took to social media to share a post in remembrance of his life with an attached screenshot letting fans know that she was playing the song on which she is featured, ‘DJ’s Chord Organ.’

On January 17th, the day the project was released, SZA wrote on social media: “I love my friend I miss my friend.” She continued, “Grateful he saw something in me before most and treated me w love from day 1. Wish he could see how right about everything he truly was. Please go stream Balloonerism RIGHT NOW.”

In a 2018 tribute post to the late rapper after Miller’s early demise, SZA explained her friendship with the lyricist, posting, “You were the first person I met when I moved here.” She added, “U let me come over every day and be whoever I wanted. Showed up for me in ways I can never express or repay. My gratitude is infinite.”

SZA expressed her gratitude and love for Miller, adding, “[You were] the first person to believe in me and make stuff w me. Record me all day n eat them nasty ass ham sandwiches. Introduced me to the coolest ppl I’ve ever met. Showed me how to play gadgets I never seen before. I swam in my clothes once n u gave me pink polo pyjamas to change into instead of something ugly ….u too fucking real .”

The latest posthumous album from Miller was accompanied by a film. As reported by Rolling Stone, the movie was first screened January 15th in select theatres in Mac’s hometown of Pittsburgh with tickets costing only $5.

The movie was then shown in New York City and premiered internationally in cities such as Toronto, London, Paris, Melbourne, Berlin, Sydney, Dublin, and Auckland.

Per the synopsis, “Balloonerism follows a group of school friends who are transfigured by the music of a chord organ and launched into a shadow world. Swallowed by the turtle of time, they must plod through the underbelly of adulthood.”
