Soulja Boy released from jail after prosecutors reject gun charge

Soulja Boy was arrested on weapons charges over the weekend. However, he was released on August 5th after prosecutors refused to file charges.

The rapper (real name DeAndre Way) was released at 2pm following his arrest on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson told Rolling Stone, “A case was declined due to insufficient evidence.”

The Los Angeles Police Department initially reported that Soulja was a passenger in a car near Melrose Ave and Genesee Ave in Fairfax at 2:30am on August 3rd. Police found a gun inside the vehicle, and he was booked on a felony charge at 6:18am.

A charge evaluation worksheet read, “[Officers] discovered a firearm in the rear seat near a suspect. Both the suspect and the driver denied owning the firearm.” Soulja spent two nights in jail waiting for a decision to be made.

Shortly after being released from custody, Soulja updated his 7.3 million Instagram followers, writing on his Stories, “First day out.”

The night he was arrested, Soulja had been celebrating his birthday at Hollywood’s Poppy nightclub. The rapper took to his Instagram Stories to share a video inside the club, writing, “I don’t need no security.”

Earlier this year, Soulja was forced to pay $4million relating to claims he assaulted, sexually battered and harassed a woman. He denied wrongdoing following the verdict.

“I want to make it clear that I’m innocent,” he said. “This case was never about justice. It was about money and personal gain, and I will not let that stand. I am committed to filing an appeal and fighting for the truth to be revealed.”
