Snoop Dogg once named his favourite movie

Snoop Dogg is no stranger to Hollywood, and his cameos have become a stalwart of cinema, with the rapper appearing in everything from Training Day to Starsky & Hutch. However, his favourite film shows his more serious side, and it’s a true classic.

It goes without saying that Snoop is a colourful figure that transcends hip hop, and there’s truly nobody else like him in popular culture. At times, it feels like he’s almost too cartoonish to be real. It’s a trope that often leaves his lethal lyrics overlooked, and it’s easy to sometimes forget that there is a genuinely elite rapper hidden underneath the facade.

Of course, due to the endless advertisements that Snoop gets himself involved with and him playing up to a caricature that he’s carefully curated, it can be easy to forget he’s an originator of the G-Funk sound.

Although that aforementioned scene changed the hip hop landscape throughout the ’90s, it’s perhaps outside music where he’s made his biggest mark. His online show, GGN News, found an avid fanbase, and viewers managed to see a more profound side of Snoop.

During Martin Lawrence’s appearance, Snoop discussed his love of the actor’s movies and even revealed that his favourite film of all time is the 1973 blaxploitation picture, The Mack.

The Richard Pryor and Max Julien film came up in conversation after Lawrence says that he’d love to remake it starring the pair of them, which causes Snoop to lose his mind at the idea of being able to recreate the classic. “That’s my favourite movie, man,” Snoop says while toking on a blunt. “I went to see Max (Julien) for his birthday, he just turned 74 years old, we paid him a visit, and he’s still in his right mind. He’s strong, he’s still in his right mind so that would be a treat if we could do that while he’s still here.

“He told me that Richard Pryor cussed out the motherfucking director, he said, ‘Motherfucker, you can’t write no lines for me, I’ll do my own shit’, and he was off the rip with that shit. No script,” Snoop added in awe.

Unfortunately, Snoop and Lawrence’s version of The Mack doesn’t seem to be underway. However, the two men are currently cooking up a project together, which will be a change of pace for the rapper.

The pair are starring in the political drama, Game, which they also co-wrote the script for, which involves their characters being involved as insiders in Washington. It’s a change from the guise we are used to seeing from Snoop, and it’ll be intriguing to see him take on a more serious role rather than adding some comedy to the mix.
