Snoop Dogg biopic receives $17 million in California tax credits

The upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic has received $17 million in tax credits to shoot the movie in California.

The state confirmed the incentive on December 17th, ahead of the Universal Pictures film going into production.

The biopic will be directed by Hustle and Flow filmmaker Craig Brewer, with Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss playing the main role of Snoop.

Following the decision by the California Film Commission’s program, Snoop told The Hollywood Reporter, “Big love to the California Film Commission and Gov Newsom for holdin’ it down with that tax credit. California raised me, inspired me, and now helpin’ bring this biopic to life in 2026.”

The movie will shoot over the course of 50 days. It will provide work for 84 cast members and 190 crew members, as well as 100s of background actors. Overall, the production is projected to cost a total of $48.3 million.

In June, it was announced that Daviss would be taking on the role, with Snoop serving as a producer alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.

The story is set to portray Snoop’s journey from adolescence to adulthood, detailing his career and personal relationships.

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Snoop said, “Jonathan is the whole thing, man. He’s a dynamic actor, he’s a great spirit, and he’s a learner. He’s able to take things and make it better.”

He continued, “Just to have him around me and see how he engulfs the spirit of, and how my family gravitates to him, it’s just a beautiful thing to be able to find somebody that can actually do justice to you while you’re still here and able to see it.”
