How skinny jeans cost J Cole a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit
J Cole has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in rap music that it’s possible to have. But, even so, he’s experienced his fair share of missed opportunities along the way.
Early on in his career, before he signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and went on to achieve global fame, Cole was in talks to become involved with another rap legend’s operations. 50 Cent was interested in signing him to G-Unit, but things, ultimately, didn’t work out.
The reason why, as Cole revealed during an appearance on Cam’ron’s Talk With Flee podcast, was because of a fashion faux pas on the part of Cole’s younger self. It was too big a sin for 50 to abide by.
50 apparently was interested enough in Cole to arrange a meeting with the young rapper, but, when he laid eyes on him, he was dismayed by what he saw. Cole had decided to wear some tight jeans that day, and that just wouldn’t work for G-Unit.
That was Cole’s side of the story, but 50 has since come out to confirm its validity. Posting a photo of himself with Cole on social media, 50 was full of praise for him — albeit while taking a pop at his old fashion sense.
“I’m a J Cole fan man,” he posted. “The boy just had on denim spandex. WTF. How was I supposed to know that was gonna work.”
It seems that 50’s distaste for Cole’s tight jeans really did give him second thoughts about signing the young rapper. An artist’s look is, after all, extremely important. But there were other reasons, too, as 50 previously spoke about on The Breakfast Club in 2022.
On that occasion, 50 claimed that Cole wasn’t right for G-Unit because of the wider state of rap at the time. From his perspective, the market wasn’t ready for a “conscious” rapper like Cole during the second half of the 2000s. Clearly that situation went on to change.
It all worked out in the end, of course. Cole signed with Jay-Z and went on to have a massive career, while 50’s success in business has continued. Everyone involved proved a winner.
