Redman opens up about celibacy: “No sex is nothing to me now”
Redman has opened up about going celibate for over two years following the end of his marriage. During a recent interview, the New Jersey rapper spoke candidly about refraining from sex and weed during one of the toughest times of his life.
The man behind ‘Da Rockwilder’ released his first album in nine years on Christmas Eve, delivering the sequel to his classic 1996 album Muddy Waters. Redman claims that his divorce, which lasted the better half of a decade, was one of the main reasons for its delay.
“My girl and I broke up maybe three, four years ago,” he told Ambrosia for Heads. “I was going through such a shit divorce that lasted seven years that played a role in why it took so long to drop Muddy Waters [Too]. I had so much on my plate. I actually fasted two years and a half — no fucking, no smoking. Straight two years and a half. It was the best thing I could have done in my life. It was the best thing.”
Although he was able to go cold turkey for a couple of years, it wasn’t always easy. “Believe me, I wanted to,” he said. “I was fighting it, I was sweating. I was in my house going crazy ’cause I live alone. I was constantly talking to myself. Me and God, just back and forth. But I made it and it was the best thing I could have done.”
Redman spoke about the benefits of celibacy and how sex isn’t a necessity to him anymore. “It cleared out so much distraction,” he said. “My reception is much clearer now. Having no sex is nothing to me now because it was all feeding the flesh. Once I did that, I was able to control how I moved, what I like, what is not good for me.”
Another high-profile rapper, 50 Cent, recently spoke about abstaining from sex and his reasons for doing so. “Listen, when you calm down, you can focus, alright?” he said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “It’s been good. I’ve been good to me.” He claimed there are “a couple of motivating factors in our evolutionary biology, and they don’t include celibacy.”
Speaking against sleeping around, he explained, “That’s when things start getting complicated, things start getting confusing because people are coming for different reasons. And then, if you like, go on a date, but you have no interest in anything… I can see you now. I said, ‘God damn girl, you fine, but you ain’t got nothing going on.'”
