Rapper Kay Flock appeals racketeering and attempted murder sentence
Bronx rapper Kay Flock is looking to reverse the 30-year prison sentence he was handed in December over gang shootings.
The 22-year-old (real name Kevin Perez) was convicted of racketeering conspiracy, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon in aid of racketeering, as well as a firearm discharge offence.
However, according to Complex, Flock has appealed the sentence from US District Judge Lewis J Liman.
After he was sentenced, his lawyer, Michael T Ashley, said he had “little doubt” that an appeal was on its way.
Ashley requested the statutory minimum of 10 years, or for Flock to cooperate in a multi-year, 11-point “punishment plan.”
He was given 30 years behind bars, despite US Attorney Patrick Moroney pushing for a 50-year sentence.
Ashley argued that Flock was only 13 when he joined the Sev Side/DOA gang through an older man who “used him for his own ends.”
In a statement after he was sentenced, US Attorney Jay Clayton said, “Kevin Perez used violence and fame to fuel fear and intimidation across the Bronx. Perez and his gang members carried out a string of shootings that struck both rival gang members and innocent bystanders.”
He continued, “Perez also used his platform as a prominent rapper to celebrate his violence: threatening his rivals, bragging about his shootings, and taunting his victims. His brazen actions unleashed a series of back-and-forth retaliatory shootings that killed and injured far too many people in the Bronx.”
Flock has over 1.4 million monthly Spotify listeners. His biggest songs, ‘PSA’ and ‘Is Ya Ready’, have 213 million and 151 million streams, respectively. He’s collaborated with Cardi B, Gucci Mane, and many others.
