Man shot in New York due to hip-hop dispute

A man was shot in Wellsville, New York, over the weekend following an argument over rap music. Days later, the shooting was followed by the arrest of a man from Friendship, New York.

The 32-year-old victim checked into Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville on September 8th with a gunshot wound to his leg.

According to The Buffalo News, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested 49-year-old Jonathan J Johnson on September 9th. SP Amity officers located and arrested Johnson before taking him to Allegany County Jail for CAP arraignment.

He was hit with three felony charges, including second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

An investigation revealed that Johnson and the victim had argued over rap music on September 5th, with the victim being struck with a single shot from a handgun. Details are currently unknown about the specifics of the incident and which rappers the two men disagreed on.

Police are asking potential witnesses to contact public information officer James O’Callaghan with any details relating to the incident. As of September 11th, Johnson is still in jail, according to inmate searches at the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

Rap music has led to fights in New York in the past. In 2014, one half of a rap duo shot his partner inside a Bronx store following an argument over a music video. The BBC reported that the man was left in critical condition.

The shop’s owner, Ali Abdul, said they were “best friends.” He added, “They were fighting over who’s the star, who’s better. They were drunk. They spit at each other then one guy pulled out a gun and shot the other guy five times.”
