R. Kelly wins appeal extension after testing positive for Covid

R. Kelly has won an extension for his appeal after the singer tested positive for Covid.

He is currently imprisoned in Brooklyn after being found guilty in September of racketeering, bribery and violating the Mann Act, which is the transportation of women across state lines for “immoral” purposes, including illegal sexual activity. Kelly was found guilty of every charge against him and is due to be sentenced in May.

It is understood that Kelly will be facing at least ten years in prison, but he’s now been granted an extension for his appeal, which was previously due to expire yesterday. U.S. District Judge Ann M. Donnelly has ruled that he has an additional fortnight to arrange his appeal.

Kelly’s new lawyer Jennifer Bonjean said in a new letter: “It is vitally important that Mr. Kelly meaningfully participates in his post-trial defence. The [jail] has not indicated when visits will resume which is less than ideal, but undersigned counsel is confident that she can accomplish necessary discussions with Mr. Kelly via upcoming scheduled Zoom visits.”

Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn M. Kasulis added: “Today’s guilty verdict forever brands R. Kelly as a predator, who used his fame and fortune to prey on the young, the vulnerable, and the voiceless for his own sexual gratification.”

Meanwhile, when the singer was found guilty, he said: “Today’s verdict was disappointing and I will continue to prove my innocence and fight for my freedom.”
