Playboi Carti started a relationship with Iggy Azalea in 2018, but things quickly came to an end in 2020. The pair have a four-year-old son named Onyx Carter, who was born in April 2020, but that wasn’t enough to keep them together.

In February 2023, during an appearance on Emily Ratajkowski’s High Low with EmRata podcast, Iggy detailed the moment she ended their relationship. She revealed that she left Carti shortly after the birth of their child, comparing their “volatile” relationship to what she saw in her parents.

“Like, right after I had my son, I left his father,” she said. “Something happened one day with my son’s father and me, and it was just one of those moments where you’re just like, ‘I didn’t wake up thinking this is what my day would be.’ But by the end of the day, I was on a plane to Los Angeles and I never went back.”

She continued, “Don’t get me wrong. We had a volatile relationship and you know that, you’re not an idiot. You know when something’s not working, I knew it wasn’t working. But I also just had a baby, it was COVID. There were a lot of things to navigate for me at that time and I didn’t think I’d be leaving when I left.”

It was reported that Carti choked his pregnant girlfriend during a domestic dispute in December 2022. Iggy responded to the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Been there. Done that. Warned you.”

She added, “Imagine having a pregnant girlfriend and pretending they don’t exist until it comes out you like to abuse them too, and rarely visiting your actual son unless is because you’re running from whatever problems ya got going on in Atlanta and the press with your serial abuse of woman.”

During an interview with XXL in April 2022, Carti was full of praise for Iggy as a mother, calling her a “great mum.” He explained, “I love her to death. I’m single. She’s single now. But that’s one of the best mothers in the world. And that’s what you got to put in the book, you hear me? I love her to death. She is the best mother in the world.”

At the end of the interview, he added, “Just make sure [to put in] that I love my baby mother. It definitely needs to be known that [Iggy] is the best mother in the world. My son is perfect. He’s too perfect. I need to rough him up a little bit.”

Iggy claimed people had been “misled” by Carti’s comments, alleging he’s a different person away from the media. “I don’t fuck with a man I’m not even remotely on good terms with claiming he pay my bills,” she said. “I pay my bills. Secondly, saying nice things for an interview sounds great but in real life he talks to me like shit so badly I had to stop all direct contact.”

Speaking more about his words, she added, “His team has been calling about the interview, hoping for my silence because they know what my reaction would be. I do appreciate being called a great mum but when that’s not reflective of what he has to say in real life, I’d much rather be left out of being mentioned at all.”
