Playboi Carti announces release date for ‘I Am Music’ album
Playboi Carti has finally announced the release date for his new album, I Am Music. After months of speculation, the Atlanta rapper is set to drop his long-awaited project on March 14th.
Taking to Instagram on March 12th, Carti shared a video of someone saying, “New Carti album this Friday.” He also wrote “Friday” on X, with Spotify posting, “FRIDAY. ALBUM. @playboicarti,” alongside billboards that read, “STREETS READY.”
I Am Music is set to be released through AWGE and Interscope Records. The news arrived after Carti confirmed the album was finished on March 9th. The tracklist is unknown, and whether his last single, ‘All Red’, will appear on the project is unclear.
Producer Cardo revealed some details about Carti’s new album during an interview with Billboard in September, claiming they came up with a new subgenre: burnt music. “We’ll be in the studio, like, ‘This music is burnt,’” he said. He also cited Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul and Juicy J, DJ Toomp, The Legendary Traxster and Halloween director/composer John Carpenter as influences.
In November, Rolling Loud Festival hyped up the album, writing on X, “Carti just played us some new music on FaceTime. I Am Music is coming. Two of the songs he played got huge features on it.” The festival’s co-founder, Tariq Cherif, added, “Was on FaceTime with Carti last night for like 2 hours. Bro played me some fiiiiiire from the album. I Am Music is about to be a classic.”
Carti dropped his last album, Whole Lotta Red, on December 25th, 2020. Executive produced by Kanye West, the project debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 100,000 units in its first week. Ye was also one of the features alongside Future and Kid Cudi.
Whole Lotta Red served as the follow-up to his debut album, Die Lit, which was released in 2018. The album reached number three on the albums chart, featuring Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Gunna, Skepta, Pi’erre Bourne, Bryson Tiller, Chief Keef and Young Nudy.
