The mammoth hit Offset hated rapping on: “I hated this song”

Offset hated recording one of the biggest songs of his career. The Migos rapper joined forces with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin in 2017 for a collaborative album titled Without Warning, which was home to their hit single ‘Ric Flair Drip’.

Despite the song’s success, the Atlanta rapper has spoken openly about how much he disliked the idea of the record. He couldn’t get on board with an instrumental that sounded like it was for West Coast artists, so he didn’t care too much about the lyrics he was laying down on the track. As it turned out, the bars took his career to new places.

“I hated the song,” he said on The Debut Live. “It was a West Coast beat — I’m not saying nothing like that — but it was like, during this time it’s 2017… When I did it, I didn’t take it serious. I’m like, ‘Goin’ to the jeweller, bust the AP, yeah,’ like I’m not trying.”

Offset hated ‘Ric Flair Drip’ so much that, after the album was released, he called out Metro Boomin for deciding to include it on the final tracklist. “I’m like, ‘Bruh, don’t put this song on the album,’” he said. “He [was] in charge of picking the songs… He put it on the album. I wake up to it in the morning like, ‘Man, this n-gga put the song on the album.’”

The inclusion ended up working out for the best, with the song peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track no doubt played a part in making Without Warning a commercial success, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200 with 53,000 units sold in its first week.

“I’ll never forget, like three days later we [were] number one on Apple [Music], and he [was] like, ‘I told you. I do this shit!’” Offset said about Metro Boomin. ‘Ric Flair Drip’ references American wrestler Ric Flair and his infamous “woo” phrase. Offset raps on the hook, “Ric Flair drip, go ‘woo’ on a bitch/ 57 90, split the coupe on my wrist/ Multi-million dollar, I’m a fool with the hits/ Hop up in the Lamb’ and drop the roof, show the tits.” Flair even appeared in the music video for the song.

The iconic wrestler spoke highly about Offset during an interview with Revolt, calling him a “phenomenal young man.” He continued, “So respectful, so just genuine. He’s a real guy. Great music. He’s just living that life, that life that I love. The guy’s got so much damn talent, it would be hard to hold him back even if they tried. He’s a phenomenal guy.”

In May, Ric Flair told the Jaxxon Podcast that ‘Ric Flair Drip’ had made $48 million for Offset, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, but he only received $39,000 of the profits. The reason being, Flair had just got out of hospital at the time after suffering a ruptured intestine and didn’t have an agent to put together a contract. He claimed he had no memory for six months, resulting in poor business decisions being made.
